When selecting a web hosting package, you need to think about how much web space you need, what features it needs to have, and whether or not you are concerned about advertising banners.

Despite popular belief, html is not actually a programing language. It is a descriptive language. It is basically a set of instructions that tell the visitor's browser how to draw the web page to be viewed. A browser is a program that runs on your computer that can read html files. Unfortunately, just as different humans can interpret the same event in different ways, so can different browsers. This means that your web page could appear differently on different machines. Some browsers may not even be able to open your page. In particular, a great many web sites are written with a PC bias and will not run properly when the web site visitor uses a mac.

FTP UPLOADS
Most files are uploaded to your hosted web space using software called an FTP program. Our favorite ftp program is called Fetch. FTP stands for file transfer protocol. The FTP program uses a user name and password to access your web space and transfer files to and from your personal computer. Some hosting packages simply use your account user name and password, others use a separate FTP user name and password. Many hosting plans use the domain name as the FTP username.
FILE SIZE
The size of web site files has always been an issue. Bigger files take up more of your web space hosting package, take longer to be read by a visitor's browser, and may burn up a lot of bandwidth - both yours and your visitor's. This isn't a problem with wed pages, but can be a problem with resource files such as pictures and movies. The important thing to remember is resolution. Most visitors will view your graphics online. Computer screen resolution is actually very poor when compared to printer resolutions. This means that online graphics need less information than printable graphics to look good. Try to use image processing software to decrease your image file size. Reduce the resolution to 72 dpi (equal to computer screen resolution) and reduce the physical dimensions of the image. You can also compress the image with no obvious loss of detail. JPEG compression is ideal for photographic image compression. If you want downloadable images, then try zip compression.
