When selecting a web hosting package, you need to think about how much web space you need, what features it needs to have, and whether or not you are concerned about advertising banners.
If you are hosting an online shop or pay site, you will need significant web space, cgi facilities, possibly SSL certification, and no banners. However, small sites with less than 50 pages and relatively few pictures require much less space. Most personal web sites or small information sites could be hosted for free. All you would need is a domain name. You can then upload your web site to the free hosting web space that is provided by us.
The term "web hosting" refers to a piece of hard disc space on a computer called a server. An internet server is permanently connected to the internet, although it is protected from internet intruders by a physical firewall. This hosting computer is called a server because it "serves files" to people that ask for them. These files are usually web pages written in html, or a similar language, but can also include pictures, video, sound resources and programs. Most internet programs are written in a cgi language. CGI means common gateway interface. There are several cgi languages including perl and PHP. If you are not a programer, you won't need to bother about cgi. Most web sites are still written in html. There are a large number of web development programs that will write the html code for you. Many word processors will also generate appropriate html code. Microsoft Word, for example, is on the desktop of a great many personal computers and can create web pages for you. However, writing html code from scratch is not as hard as it sounds. Despite popular belief, html is not actually a programing language. It is a descriptive language. It is basically a set of instructions that tell the visitor's browser how to draw the web page to be viewed. A browser is a program that runs on your computer that can read html files. Unfortunately, just as different humans can interpret the same event in different ways, so can different browsers. This means that your web page could appear differently on different machines. Some browsers may not even be able to open your page. In particular, a great many web sites are written with a PC bias and will not run properly when the web site visitor uses a mac.
A domain name is an address. It is a method used by a visitor's browser to find your web site. The domain name for this web site is: tacitrainbow-webhosting.com When you register a domain name, you are actually renting the name. Your period of domain ownership of that name will last for at least one year.
The www. prefix is not actually necessary. It's a relic from the early days of the internet, but tends to remain as a convention. Your browser does need the "http://" prefix before the domain name. Consequently, the full address of this site is:
http://tacitrainbow-webhosting.com or http://www.tacitrainbow-webhosting.com
When a browser visits your domain name, it automatically looks in a folder called the root folder, or root directory. This can be thought of as the desktop folder of your website. The rest of your web site is comprised of sub-directories in the same way that you store information on your home computer. There are folders above the root folder, but these can't be seen by a browser. The default file name in the root folder is the index file (index.html). If you do not upload an index file, then a visitor's browser can see the full structure of your web site. ALWAYS upload an index.html file as the front door of your web site. The full address of the front door for this web site is:
http://www.tacitrainbow-webhosting.com/index.html
Most files are uploaded to your hosted web space using software called an FTP program. Our favorite ftp program is called Fetch. FTP stands for file transfer protocol. The FTP program uses a user name and password to access your web space and transfer files to and from your personal computer. Some hosting packages simply use your account user name and password, others use a separate FTP user name and password. Many hosting plans use the domain name as the FTP username.
The size of web site files has always been an issue. Bigger files take up more of your web space hosting package, take longer to be read by a visitor's browser, and may burn up a lot of bandwidth - both yours and your visitor's. This isn't a problem with wed pages, but can be a problem with resource files such as pictures and movies. The important thing to remember is resolution. Most visitors will view your graphics online. Computer screen resolution is actually very poor when compared to printer resolutions. This means that online graphics need less information than printable graphics to look good. Try to use image processing software to decrease your image file size. Reduce the resolution to 72 dpi (equal to computer screen resolution) and reduce the physical dimensions of the image. You can also compress the image with no obvious loss of detail. JPEG compression is ideal for photographic image compression. If you want downloadable images, then try zip compression.
